Yoga for Winter

Now the deeper part of winter is really starting to set in and on 22nd December we have the winter solstice, the point in the calendar at which the sun is furthest away from the equator. Once we pass that point, the light increases (this is particularly noticeable toward the end of January) with this increase exposure to light, our energy and mood lifts.

Working with the energies of this time involves withdrawing inward slowing down in our lives and our yoga practice. It is an ideal time to introduce more meditation and pratyahara (withdrawal of the senses inward). The Yin Yoga practice of holding poses for longer is also useful now, as is the Pawanmuktasana (Joint Freedom Series) – also known as Shaktibandha (Goddess Energy Locking Poses). This wonderful series really helps us to keep our joints healthy during the winter months when there is a tendency to get a little stiff and creaky.

The organs associated with this time of year are the kidneys. The associated emotion is fear… There are many unsettling world events that are tapping into this emotion right now and I feel that yoga practice has a lot to offer us in helping to take on the great challenges that face us. Looking after and taking responsibility for our health is a primary concern in these times. In the long term we may not be able to rely on the NHS or generous pensions to take care of us as we grow older. But we can rely on yoga. Each time we practice we make an investment in our health on all levels, mind-body-soul – yoga  (practiced alongside a holistic lifestyle) really is our best health insurance policy! My wonderful teachers (many of whom are in their 60s and 70s) are an inspiring testament to how a regular practice can support you in being physically, mentally and emotionally in good health for the rest of your life.
